What is a Strategic Market Valuation?

Strategic Market Valuation, or SMV, combines Lion’s detailed preliminary valuation with forward-looking exit analysis. It considers industry and M&A activity, the company’s competitive position, potential acquirers and specific actions that could affect value. The result is a current valuation and an actionable roadmap with estimated effects, assumptions and dependencies.

Direct your preparation toward changes that matter

Compare selling now with preparing longer

Consider the estimated value today alongside the effort and dependencies behind possible improvements before choosing an exit timeline.

Understand potential buyer fit

See which named acquirers may have a strategic reason to consider the business and how your positioning relates to those buyer profiles.

Prioritize value gaps

Connect specific actions with estimated effects on value so preparation is guided by the transaction decision, rather than a generic improvement list.

Who should order a Strategic Market Valuation

  • Owners deciding whether to sell now or prepare for a future exit.
  • Founders who want a named potential-buyer map and a clearer view of competitive positioning.
  • Owners ready to evaluate the estimated value of specific improvements before committing time and capital.

What your SMV includes

Everything in Advanced Broker Analysis

Method selection, normalized earnings with explicit judgments, multiple factors, base case and scenarios, sensitivity tables, expected deal structure and a two-page summary.

Industry and M&A activity analysis

Research on industry conditions and relevant acquisition activity to put the company’s sale prospects and valuation assumptions into context.

Competitive positioning

An assessment of the company’s strengths, constraints and differentiation in relation to its market and potential buyer expectations.

A named potential-buyer map

Identified potential acquirers and the reasons they may fit the business. The map is research into possible fit and does not include buyer outreach or establish buyer interest.

A quantified value-gap roadmap

Specific actions linked to estimated effects on value, with the assumptions, dependencies and limitations behind those estimates. Overlapping effects should not be treated as automatically additive.

A report, roadmap and follow-up discussions

A detailed report, typically about 40 pages plus the roadmap, an executive summary, a review call and two follow-up discussions. A senior advisor prepares the valuation and joins the review with your Lion advisor.

Evaluate the value of making the business less dependent on you

An owner may consider hiring management before selling. That expense can reduce near-term earnings while improving continuity and transferability. SMV evaluates the relevant assumptions and estimated value implications so the decision accounts for both operating cost and potential buyer perception. Improvement does not automatically mean a higher multiple.

Choose SMV when you want strategic market research and a quantified preparation roadmap alongside the valuation. If your immediate need is detailed current value and expected deal structure, ABA may be sufficient.

Strategic Market Valuation questions and answers

How much does Strategic Market Valuation cost?

The SMV fee is $9,500 for the agreed valuation and strategic analysis. It includes the report, summary, value-gap roadmap, review call and two follow-up discussions. The written engagement confirms scope and scheduling.

What does SMV add to Advanced Broker Analysis?

SMV includes ABA’s detailed valuation and adds industry and M&A activity research, competitive positioning, a named potential-buyer map and a quantified value-gap roadmap. It is designed for owners evaluating preparation decisions as well as current value.

What is a quantified value-gap roadmap?

It links specific preparation actions to their estimated effect on value, with assumptions and dependencies explained. It helps you evaluate priorities. The estimates are conditional, overlapping effects may interact, and completing an action does not guarantee a higher valuation or sale price.

Will Lion contact the buyers named in the report?

Buyer outreach is not included in SMV. The map identifies potential strategic fit; it does not mean those parties have expressed interest, reviewed the company or made offers. Marketing and outreach require a separate engagement and authorization.

Can SMV help me decide whether to sell now or later?

Yes. It combines a current valuation with an assessment of potential preparation actions. You can compare the estimated effects and dependencies with the effort and time involved. You remain responsible for the business decision, and future market conditions can change the result.

Does SMV include a quality of earnings report or certified valuation?

Neither is automatically included. SMV is designed for sale and exit planning. A standalone QoE, a certified valuation or a report for a particular lender, legal or tax purpose is a separate scope that should be confirmed before ordering.

How long does SMV take, and what support follows delivery?

The delivery target is twenty business days after the signed engagement, cleared payment and acceptance of complete records. The service includes a review call and two follow-up discussions. Scheduling and any additional advisory work are confirmed in the engagement.

What are the payment and listing requirements?

Payment is due in full before work begins and is non-refundable under the accepted engagement, except as required by law. SMV does not commit you to list your business. Ongoing implementation, future valuation updates and a sale process require separate agreements.

Connect your valuation to a deliberate exit plan

Order your Strategic Market Valuation to understand current value, potential buyer fit and the preparation actions worth evaluating before your next chapter.
